Iklaina Design Brief

Overview

This design brief was the product of an undergraduate research position that took me to Iklaina, Greece! The design brief is a 101-page booklet for landscape architectural site discoveries of the Iklaina Archaeological Project. The booklet includes site inventory and analyses, cultural, architectural, and natural observations, as well as case study research of global archaeological parks.

I was incredibly fortunate to accompany the University of Missouri – St. Louis archaeological field study program to the Iklaina Archaeological Project in Pylos, Greece. I stayed with the team in Pylos for two weeks where I was able to work alongside other students and professionals. My role in Pylos included photo documentation, sketching, and concept rendering. During my visit I was able to participate in the excavations, cleaning and sorting pottery finds, and technical drawing of artifacts. I also visited famous historical and archaeological sites like Mycenae, the Palace of Nestor, the Castle of Pylos, and the Acropolis. This firsthand experience revealed unique perspectives for me when approaching the Iklaina site from a designer’s standpoint, bridging the fields of archaeology and landscape architecture.
